Fue construida por Carlos Caravedo Arca, quien fue su motor y jefe de expedición.Se emplearon en total 8 troncos (tucos) longitudinales y 5 transversales de madera de balsa, de la selva del Ecuador, por el suscrito, con ayuda del señor Guillermo Negrete, ecuatoriano. No utilice troncos tipo macho, sino HEMBRA, por de correcta flotación aunque de menor duración.La tripulación peruana consto de:· Carlos Caravedo Arca (Jefe de expedición)· Jaime Toledo Gongora· Jose Mataush RichtackLa balsa peruana "TANGAROA" empleo una vela de 6 x 4 metros mas otra pequeña de mesana.Encontré serias vicisitudes para construir la balsa; grandes dificultades para lograr la partida.Tuve que construir la "TANGAROA" SOLO en un recoveco del lugar llamado "la mar brava" en el Callao.Estando la "TANGAROA" en flote y bien acondicionada - siendo el mes de abril - y listos, se me impidió la salida. Con mis compañeros de travesía nos impusieron problemas que no tuvieron las anteriores balsas que partieron del Callao a la Polinesia.La negativa de la capitania de puerto , me obligo a mantener la "TANGAROA" anclada y encharcada en la poza del Yatch Club Peruano del Callao, por tres largos meses.En el mes de Julio - pleno invierno - obtuve el permiso. Gracias al ruido ensordecedor producido por las sirenas de los barcos y demás embarcaciones acoderados en el puerto, la "TANGAROA" parte a la Polinesia a las 11 am del 26 de Julio de 1965. Fue halada de la poza del Yatch ClubLa balsa peruana "TANGAROA" con su tripulación peruana atravesó el Océano Pacifico en 97 dias al archipiélago y 115 días a la isla de fakarava, de los cuales 18 días los empleamos en pasar Tuamotu siendo la única balsa que ha logrado atravesar archipielago peligroso archipiélago de la Polinesia Francesa por sus propios medios. La expedicion tangaroa es un hecho que por la burocracia no parte el 28 de abril , fecha de partida de todas la expediciones ,por su ideal clima al transcurrir el viaje de varios meses hasta de llegada a la Polinesia francesa.
este hecho no se dio en el caso de la unica balsa Peruana (burocracia , burocracia ) la balsa se remojo mayo junio y julio afectando su linia de flotacion.
el hecho es que fue un exito la expedicion si lo analisamos desde el hecho que logra llegar a la polinesia francesa 4 dias antes que la expedicion kon-tiki esta llegaria a la isla de raroia donde chocaria desafortunadamente con los arrecifes, la balsa tangaroa avista la isla de napuka un 31 de octubre de 1965 a los 97 dias de viaje.
la navegacion fue un 5% pesimo clima 10% mal clima y el resto entre la famosa calma chicha (sin vientos).

tendrian problemas con la radio a la altura de Piura Peru y seria su comunicacion con EL SR FALCONE DEL CALLAO Y MONSALVE DE TRUJILLO PERU asi como radio escuchas uruguayos y franceses

un 31 de octubre en la madrugada seria un dia feliz ya 50ta años atras avistarian la isla de napuka y abordarian isleños tomarian cerveza para celebrar el logro 97 dias 4 menos que la kon-tiki las canoas tratarian de introducir a la balsa al interior del lagon pero tras un tiempo se tomaria la desicion de seguir el viaje atravez de los dientes del tuamuto conocidos por su gran peligro sus arrecifes
se ve a un carlos caravedo TOSTADO POR EL SOL BARBUDO CON EL PECHO AL AIRE EN BERMUDAS con la proa de la nave para no sosobrar estrellarse a la costas de la isla fakarava tras un dia arduo y al no ver posibilidad de bordear la gran isla ( la isla fakarava tiene 46 km de largo) y ver la segunda vertiente y presumir que en esa posicion sur no seria posible seguir rumbo a tahiti capital de la comunidad de la polinesia francesa da orden de corregir GUARAS y ajustar velas para embestir la costa en la vertiente aproximadamente 16 grados 22 minutos sur grandes olas la aremetian a las playas rocosas y tras idas y venidas gemir de sus troncos el agarrarse de lo que se pudiera una gigantesca ola los arrastro con ciclopea fuerza y fueron depositados en lo alto de la isla fakarava en su vertiente sur 16°22"
